Philosophical Revelry at The Happier Hour

"In The Labyrinth of Solitude Octavio Paz writes about fiestas as experiences that move people along the path from solitude into communion. Through fiestas—mythical and religious rites, declamation and performance of poetry, love-making, theater, and epic—human beings emerge from the labyrinth of solitude to find each other in communion. For the Mexican poet, when we are solitary, longing for places and people we cherish, we feel exiled and thrown into 'the underground mazes of the labyrinth.' We have lost our place, our home in the world, and are estranged in it."

The above excerpt comes from the chapter "Dancing Out of the Labyrinth: From Solitude to Communion" in my book Loving Immigrants in America.

I recently discussed Octavio Paz's and my own ideas about fiestas and revelry as ways of creating community in The Happier Hour, a live philosophical talk show in New York City that was recorded and released as a podcast episode

I invite you to listen to my conversation about "Revelry" with host Monica McCarthy here.

And I recommend listening to any other episode on a wide range of philosophical themes here.

Cheers to The Happier Hour: Philosophy to Make Your Life Suck Less.

And cheers to y'all. ¡Salud!
