A Brooklynite Commonwealth

One of the objections that may be raised against Thomas Hobbes' concept of a social contract is that people never actually signed it. There is no contract at the foundation of civil society. Thoreau might ask how to disavow formally the presumption that he signed any such contract binding him to obey the law no matter what injustices it may require, for example. 

On Sunday, however, in front of the Commonwealth Bar, a pub in Brooklyn, I saw a sign that may be taken as the basic article of covenant for belonging to that particular commonwealth. Here is a picture. Cheers. Saúde. Salud.
